Because I Do Have a Daughter

Enjoy a lesson perfect for urban moms and their daughters, and get inspiration and young mother tips, shared with great storytelling, from another young mother

It’s been a rough couple of days. I’m not sure if it’s part of a pre-teen phase I’m not familiar with, or the “only child” syndrome or maybe it’s even the damn, summer heat.

Fact of the matter is that my daughter and I have been bumping heads. When I say that the sky is blue, she has an argument that it’s off-white, and before you know it she’s slamming the door to her bedroom and I’m sounding more like my own mother.

However, just when it looked like things couldn’t get better and we were talking in 5-word sentences, she hands me over this poem that she received in camp. “Could you read this to me?” she says, in that soft voice that still reminds me that she’s a child, but that I’ve grown weary of raising. And as I begin to read it to her, it slowly washes away all the back-and-forth that we’ve been doing recently, the crying and tantrums and heart palpitations.

So here is what my daughter shared with me and I’m sharing with you to share with your mothers/daughters.
