Name: Riquelmy Sosa, Co-founder + CEO, Mi Soul Latino
Riquelmy Sosa is a firm believer in the power of action to drive individual success and make meaning in the world. From an early age, she began working in her community on issues stemming from larger societal concerns, such as racial inequality, immigration, criminal justice and fair access to quality education. These experiences fueled her interest in the non-profit sector where she has worked for several organizations. Although Riquelmy has also worked outside of the sector in the realms of entertainment, hospitality, and law, her main passions lie in the realms of education and the use of media to share untold stories.
As a young Dominican-American, mother of two girls, Riquelmy has a vested interest in the success of her fellow Latinos and other minorities. Despite growing up in a predominantly Latino neighborhood, she struggled to find an accurate depiction of herself and the experience of Latinos in mainstream mediums and conversations, as well as vehicles that pushed and supported the attainment of fair educational practices. Fully aware of these issues that affect her peers, she is using her voice – coupled with her passion for writing – as a catalyst for change. Riquelmy is on a mission to promote personal and professional success through positive action and education, inspire the sharing of untold stories, and foster unity among the minority community.
Presently, Riquelmy is the Development and Communications Manager at Exodus Transitional Community, Inc., a non-profit organization that helps formerly incarcerated men and women successfully reintegrate into mainstream society. In her role, she has spearheaded educational programs to help those coming out of prison successfully enroll in higher education and complete their studies. She is also the co-founder and CEO of Mi Soul Latino, an online multimedia platform whose mission is to showcase the diverse perspectives, passions and experiences that drive the bicultural Latino community, as well as empower this new generation to dream big, go hard, and live by their own definitions. She will be graduating from New York University in 2013.
